Mike opened the door to his pickup truck and got in. He sat in the drivers seat and rested his head on the steering wheel; tears flowed freely down his face, tears of sorrow, and tears of pain, but mostly, tears of hatred.
The boom of thunder woke him. He looked at his watch. He had been asleep for over an hour. He opened his truck’s door and stepped out. Mike took a deep breath to steady himself, and walked back into the house.
In the dark, Mike could see his mother sitting at the kitchen table. “Mom,” Mike said softly, “I’m sorry for what I said before.” He turned on the light and looked at the stiffening corpse of his mother. A bloody knife rested in Mike’s left hand.
As if in a dream, Mike looked at the gore-streaked knife that he was grasping, and let his hand open. The knife twirled over twice and hit the ground with a loud Thunk! that seemed to echo throughout the entire house.
“Mom,” Mike started, staring at the corpse of his mother,
“I think I’m going crazy.”
